The hydrangea: houseplant and garden plant in one pot.

For years it has been a success story in the market: the hydrangea. At Tim van Leeuwen we also grow the cheerful bloomer in many different varieties. And here too we seek the challenge to create a special product: in pot sizes of 23 and 32 centimetres the colour spectacle of the Hydrangea really comes into its own. This makes the hydrangea both an eye-catcher in the living room and an eye-catcher in the garden and on the terrace.

We prefer to focus on species that are not common.

The hydrangea assortment is still growing considerably. At Tim van Leeuwen we select a number of varieties from that assortment that are considered standard colours. And we also grow a line of ‘specialties’. Varieties that have something that another variety does not have, such as double-coloured flowers, salmon-coloured flowers or varieties with dark leaves. In close contact with hydrangea breeders we are continuously working on innovation in our cultivation plan of around fifteen different high-quality varieties.

Hydrangea information & care tips

Hydrangeas love light

Hydrangeas need a bright spot in the living room, but avoid direct sunlight to prevent leaf burn. A location near a window facing east or north is ideal. Ensure a constant temperature, without draughts or extreme temperature changes. During the flowering period, a slightly cooler spot is beneficial to keep the flowers beautiful for longer. Do not place the plant too close to heat sources such as radiators to prevent dehydration.

Take it easy on the water

Hydrangeas need a lot of water, especially during flowering. Keep the potting soil evenly moist, but avoid having the roots stand in water. This prevents root rot. Water regularly in small amounts and ensure good drainage. Preferably use rainwater or decalcified water, because hydrangeas are sensitive to lime. Do not let the potting soil dry out completely, but also avoid constantly wet soil.

A little bit of nutrition every month

Feed your hydrangea monthly during the growing season with a fertilizer that is suitable for flowering plants. Choose a fertilizer with a higher potassium content to encourage flowering. Be careful not to give too much nitrogen, as this can lead to lush growth but fewer flowers. Fertilization is not necessary during the winter months, as the plant is dormant.
